Chamber Concerts

  • Anna Handler, piano | Artist in Residence
  • Laura Handler, violin
  • Alexandra Kahrer, cello

The programme explores contrasts that come together in dialogue, thereby leading to greater insight and peace. The ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata still feels like a concert piece, whilst at the same time questioning its own impact. The Cello Sonata in A major, by contrast, focuses on closeness, love and personal happiness. These feelings continue in the trios: the musical dialogue is conducted by three – at times tender and calm, at times bold and forward-pressing, as a search for inner peace.

  • Duo Runge und Ammon
  • Eckart Runge, cello
  • Jacques Ammon, piano

Voyager is a new concert project by the duo Runge and Ammon, which places Beethoven’s works for cello and piano in a contemporary context and celebrates the humanist ideals of the Enlightenment as well as the belief in the inviolable dignity of the human person. Spanning three sonatas and a set of variations, the programme covers the full range of Beethoven's creative output, from his early through to his middle and late periods. These works are juxtaposed with contemporary arrangements from rock, pop and jazz, which in turn embody a vision of humanity, tolerance and cultural dialogue. The arrangements are being created in close collaboration with Wolf Kerschek and include, amongst others, music by Coldplay, Led Zeppelin and Lady Gaga. On the one hand, the title refers to the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes, which have been travelling through interstellar space for almost fifty years and have fundamentally altered Earth’s view of what was once thought to be familiar in the universe. Voyager 1 also carries a cultural legacy of humanity on board in the form of the 'Golden Record', including works by Ludwig van Beethoven. On the other hand, the title refers to the artistic journey ('voyage') of the duo, which will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary in 2027 and whose artistic ethos lies in opening up new perspectives on the multifaceted cosmos of classical music.

  • Cuarteto Casals
  • Vera Martínez Mehner, violin
  • Abel Tomàs Realp, violin
  • Cristina Cordero, viola
  • Arnau Tomàs Realp, cello

For almost three decades, the Cuarteto Casals has been a defining force on the international chamber music scene and has established itself as one of the most significant string quartets of our time. Beethoven looked to Bach as a role model and strove to develop his own art of the fugue to the same high standard.
